New workshop to start off the New Year!

Letters of Love: The Italic Hand
Instructor: Matt Wright
Saturdays, January 10, 17, 24 , 2026
9:30–11:30 am PST
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
$140 USD
Refine the elegance and precision of the Italic hand in this three-week workshop designed for calligraphers looking to elevate their technique and develop fully realized compositions. Through focused study of minuscule and majuscule forms, we will explore consistency, rhythm, spacing, and the expressive potential of Italic lettering.
Each week includes demonstrations, guided practice, and individual feedback as we move from letterform refinement into layout and page design. Students will work toward creating their own Valentine’s Day–themed composition, integrating text hierarchy, line breaks, margins, and optional decorative elements.
To make your project personally meaningful, students are encouraged to bring favorite love poems, sonnets, wedding vows, or short romantic texts to use in their compositions. This class is ideal for calligraphers who already have experience with broad-edge scripts and want to deepen their mastery while creating thoughtful, beautifully structured pieces.

Embossing & Monoline
with Victor Kams

3-day online workshop
Saturdays, February 7, 14, & 21, 2026
12:00 to 2:00pm PST
$145 USD
When we think of block capitals and monoline calligraphy, Rudolf Koch’s iconic typeface Neuland often comes to mind. Yet monoline calligraphy extends far beyond Koch’s renowned work. Its modular structures invite playfulness and open up endless possibilities for composition and graphic expression.
Monoline calligraphy is particularly well-suited for exploring calligrams and serves as an excellent introduction to the art of handmade embossing. Its bold, solid strokes make the cutting process more approachable when working with an X-Acto knife, allowing for precision and control.
In this three-day online workshop, we will explore my personal approach to monoline calligraphy, experimenting with variations in size, shape, rhythm, and composition. From there, we will transition into the hand embossing process, transforming our designs into striking embossed or debossed works of art.
Students will be encouraged to express their individual style while following clear, step-by-step techniques to achieve clean, sharp, and professional embossing results. Embossing and debossing on paper are highly visual and elegant techniques that can stand alone or be beautifully combined with calligraphy.
If you’ve admired embossed calligraphic works and wondered how they are created, this workshop will guide you through the process from concept to finished piece.

Highly Opinionated Calligraphy

Everybody has a lot of opinions. When it comes to the way letters are made, I am overflowing with them — and this is a class that lets ‘em fly. From classic to modern, I have thoughts about what works and what has always bugged the heck out of me, as well as things that I’ve changed my mind about over the years — good to bad and vice versa. The overwhelming look will be with respect, but I promise we’ll be catty, too.
We’re talking about pens and brushes, and scripts and caps — in short, everything, because everything has some impact on everything else. What can work here gets in our way there, but can really make it shine over there. There will be plenty of influence from some of history’s more unusual practitioners for whom I hold affection. I believe in calligraphy as a big circle and there isn’t a move or a letter that doesn’t have resonance elsewhere. So we’ll be locating all those bridges across that circle of writing.
Open to all levels: Solid opinionated moves for the advanced beginner, and refinement and provocation for the experienced, and a chance to debate for all.
Materials: A large-ish pen:
- Horizon (folded brass flat pen) 5/16″ or 3/8″ or similar (Coits or Hiros), my favorite by far or Automatic, size 3A, 4, or 4A orPilot Parallel Pen, 6mm size (blue cap) plus your favorite pens you already have Flat brush, 1/2″ W&N 995, plus any other brushes you already have. Non-waterproof ink. A tube or two of gouache (WN Indigo or Prussian Blue have the greatest power).
- A Pentel Color Brush plus any other brushes you want to try or already have – W/N Series 7 or similar, Asian, Lebenzon, etc. Large paper with a bit of texture; I like Strathmore Charcoal pad (300 series, yellow cover. Canson Charcoal is NOT good for pen work — it bleeds. Strathmore doesn’t. Diploma Parchment is great.) Pencil (&/ or a colored pencil or two – Prismacolors are the best) and ruler. Optional: Graphic white out (Pro-White) &/or light or bright colors of gouache and colored paper, IF you wish to write in reverse. Optional: Ruling pens.
We are excited to have the following fabulous artists on the schedule for 2026:
