Cheryl Jacobsen:
Cheryl Jacobsen is an artist in Iowa City. Her work varies widely from design and straightforward lettering, to illustrations and art. She is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Iowa where she teaches a variety of classes for the University’s Center for the Book including a history of lettering, and several in basic and more advanced calligraphic hands. Her personal lettering work uses text as a medium to create images that speak in a visual but not necessarily literal way.
She has been using traditional calligraphic methods and materials to transcribe words for clients and at times to create art that feels historic, but challenges the traditional relationships of foreground to background and expectations of legibility. She is also very fond of creating assemblages of found objects either for herself or for you on a commission basis.

With degrees in Fine Arts and Graphic Design, she lectured for many years on Graphic Design and Editorial Design in the University of Buenos Aires, and later on as an Associate Professor in Typography. Marina took a year-long study under a professor trained by a Japanese master, exploring eastern principles of Beauty in sumi-e and eastern calligraphy. She distilled and blended these principles with her rich experience and background in the fine arts, typography and graphic arts, employing unique approaches and techniques that blend diverse disciplines of art, textile art, graphic design, sumi-e and calligraphy.
Marina’s works, vibrating with a love for nature and exploding with life and colour, have been exhibited internationally and are part of collections in institutions and private collections around the world. Marina has received numerous national and international awards, and has been featured widely in calligraphic arts publications.
A prolific artist, Marina finds joy as an experimental art calligrapher and book artist, and continues to teach internationally. Sharing with students the creative process is an extremely enriching practice which ends up redefining the creative process itself. Matt Wright:
With 16 years of calligraphy experience and 7 years of teaching, I am passionate about guiding students through the art of calligraphy in a supportive, methodical, and engaging way. Holding a Fine Arts degree from Greenville University and a background in drawing, painting, and ceramics, I bring a well-rounded design perspective to my teaching. My approach focuses on both technical precision and personal expression, encouraging students to develop their own artistic voice. Rather than teaching my personal aesthetic to imitate, I provide “bare bones” exemplars that students can use to build their own lettering voice. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced calligrapher, my goal is to help you build confidence and artistry in your lettering journey.
