Refine the elegance and precision of the Italic hand in this three-week workshop designed for calligraphers looking to elevate their technique and develop fully realized compositions. Through focused study of minuscule and majuscule forms, we will explore consistency, rhythm, spacing, and the expressive potential of Italic lettering.

Each week includes demonstrations, guided practice, and individual feedback as we move from letterform refinement into layout and page design. Students will work toward creating their own Valentine’s Day–themed composition, integrating text hierarchy, line breaks, margins, and optional decorative elements.

When we think of block capitals and monoline calligraphy, Rudolf Koch’s iconic typeface Neuland often comes to mind. Yet monoline calligraphy extends far beyond Koch’s renowned work. Its modular structures invite playfulness and open up endless possibilities for composition and graphic expression.
Monoline calligraphy is particularly well-suited for exploring calligrams and serves as an excellent introduction to the art of handmade embossing. Its bold, solid strokes make the cutting process more approachable when working with an X-Acto knife, allowing for precision and control.
In this three-day online workshop, we will explore my personal approach to monoline calligraphy, experimenting with variations in size, shape, rhythm, and composition. From there, we will transition into the hand embossing process, transforming our designs into striking embossed or debossed works of art.
Students will be encouraged to express their individual style while following clear, step-by-step techniques to achieve clean, sharp, and professional embossing results. Embossing and debossing on paper are highly visual and elegant techniques that can stand alone or be beautifully combined with calligraphy.
If you’ve admired embossed calligraphic works and wondered how they are created, this workshop will guide you through the process from concept to finished piece.

Everybody has a lot of opinions. When it comes to the way letters are made, I am overflowing with them — and this is a class that lets ‘em fly. From classic to modern, I have thoughts about what works and what has always bugged the heck out of me, as well as things that I’ve changed my mind about over the years — good to bad and vice versa. The overwhelming look will be with respect, but I promise we’ll be catty, too.

We’re talking about pens and brushes, and scripts and caps — in short, everything, because everything has some impact on everything else. What can work here gets in our way there, but can really make it shine over there. There will be plenty of influence from some of history’s more unusual practitioners for whom I hold affection. I believe in calligraphy as a big circle and there isn’t a move or a letter that doesn’t have resonance elsewhere. So we’ll be locating all those bridges across that circle of writing.

Supply list: Speedball Nibs C-2 or LC-2. your favorite grid or practice paper, and optional – some good paper for final work.

Past 3-day Workshops:

This workshop will cover experimenting with watercolor techniques mixed with gouache, pastel, and ink. How can a color palette be transformed into textures or backgrounds for calligraphic work? We will explore expressive botanical work, as well as background and figure textures in landscape and collaged papers. Compositions will be assembled for letters to be added later. Our work will result in a texture-like stitched piece along with a book-like creative piece.

This workshop focuses on the mix of drawing images with letters as well as the general importance of habit & creating good practice. JP will cover various tools and materials, a little bit on manuscript & golden ratio page layout, and more. This is a beginners class for people who might have some pen skills but not as much drawing & pencil skill under their belt.
