Presenting highly engaging online workshops & resources for artists, calligraphers, & creatives of all levels

10:00am to 12:00pm PST

Everybody has a lot of opinions. When it comes to the way letters are made, I am overflowing with them — and this is a class that lets ‘em fly. From classic to modern, I have thoughts about what works and what has always bugged the heck out of me, as well as things that I’ve changed my mind about over the years — good to bad and vice versa. The overwhelming look will be with respect, but I promise we’ll be catty, too.

We’re talking about pens and brushes, and scripts and caps — in short, everything, because everything has some impact on everything else. What can work here gets in our way there, but can really make it shine over there. There will be plenty of influence from some of history’s more unusual practitioners for whom I hold affection. I believe in calligraphy as a big circle and there isn’t a move or a letter that doesn’t have resonance elsewhere. So we’ll be locating all those bridges across that circle of writing.

Open to all levels: Solid opinionated moves for the advanced beginner, and refinement and provocation for the experienced, and a chance to debate for all.

The Silent Movie era produced lettering for Title cards and also dialogue, or intertitles. When the lettering was completed by hand, it evolved into a unique style called Eccentric Title. The course will begin with history of this unique lettering, and will survey selected hand lettered intertitles of the Silent Movie era.

We will then focus on exploring a split-script style of Eccentric title based on an original lettering plate published in the Speedball Textbook of 1918 by William Hugh Gordon.

In addition to the unique characteristics of early 1900s lettering, participants should expect to learn aspects of lettering that include pressure and release, pen manipulation, riding the corner, and specific branching principles.

Optional and available by PRE ORDER: 80pp full color handout by Randall Hasson on Lettering of the Silent Film Era. This is a publication with unique research that is exclusive to his Writing with a Bent Nib course. $27.50 with Free Shipping to continental U.S.

Creating tiny delicate Roman Capitals and allowing their placement to become a major part of the design is the focus of this workshop. First let’s look at mono-line Roman Capitals – working through their basic shapes and proportions. Next we will dress them up with delicate serifs and last, but not least, creating lovely waisted strokes. As we begin using the pointed pen, we will talk about scaling down our letterforms as we breathe life into them. With a series of carefully planned exercises we will take these capitals on a ride by taking off their training wheels (guidelines)…and letting them fly! By carefully thinking about the axis of each letterform you will create a visual texture of cascading, trickling and thoughtful scattering of letters. These will be based off your design. We will also use color and mica in our lettering designs. At the end of this workshop you will walk away with a great resource booklet that will record all of your ideas and notes.

We are excited to have the following fabulous artists scheduled for 2026-27:
