Everybody has a lot of opinions. When it comes to the way letters are made, I am overflowing with them — and this is a class that lets ‘em fly. From classic to modern, I have thoughts about what works and what has always bugged the heck out of me, as well as things that I’ve changed my mind about over the years — good to bad and vice versa. The overwhelming look will be with respect, but I promise we’ll be catty, too.
We’re talking about pens and brushes, and scripts and caps — in short, everything, because everything has some impact on everything else. What can work here gets in our way there, but can really make it shine over there. There will be plenty of influence from some of history’s more unusual practitioners for whom I hold affection. I believe in calligraphy as a big circle and there isn’t a move or a letter that doesn’t have resonance elsewhere. So we’ll be locating all those bridges across that circle of writing.
All levels. Solid opinionated moves for the advanced beginner, and refinement and provocation for the experienced, and a chance to debate for all.
What you will learn:
• To look critically at letter form
• Manipulation of pens or brushes
• Historical aspects of letter forms
LEVEL: Knowledge of Basic Hands is helpful

A blackletter hand like Textura prides itself on its upright demeanor and slow, steady
movement, but its siblings Bastarde and Gothic Cursive are a bit more laid back
(literally), and free flowing. We will explore these quicker hands, with historical and
modern examples, step by step instruction and feedback. Join Cheryl in this workshop
to create these fun and often floridly expressive hands.
What you will learn:
• Analyzing historical hands
• Working on speed and rhythm in writing
• Working with broad edged nibs
